Is Hiring Outside Consultants Worth It for Contract Disputes?

Our company recently took on a large mixed use development and things became messy once subcontractors started arguing over variation costs. Management is debating whether we should bring in construction claims consulting support because internal meetings are getting nowhere. I honestly thought these disagreements would calm down after project completion but they seem to be getting worse every week. Has anyone here worked with outside consultants during a dispute? Did they actually help organize the documentation and protect your company or did it just add more expense to the project?
